Delivering in Asheville, NC: truck routes, curbs and local freight

A driver's guide to downtown Asheville and Buncombe County: I-26 Connector ramp closures, the NC 191 truck ban, NCDOT work as of October 2026, downtown loading zone rules, holiday traffic, the big shippers and the nearest scales.

Rules, hours and road conditions change. Every fact below links to its source; check the source before you roll if it matters to your run.

The short version

Asheville is in the middle of the I-26 Connector, a 7-mile rebuild of the interstate through the west side of town. Ramps at Riverside Drive, Hill Street and the Westgate flyover are now closed for good, and Hill Street itself is closed through at least the end of 2027. [11][7][5][6]

If you run over 13,000 pounds, stay off NC 191 between I-240 and US 19-23 Business. NCDOT's restriction table bans heavier trucks there. [12]

Downtown meters allow two hours. If you need a curb loading zone held, the city sells closures with 72 hours notice. [13][14]

Holiday traffic starts early. Biltmore's Christmas season opens Nov. 3. Everything here is as of October 2026, so check DriveNC and call the receiver before a run. [17][31]

The I-26 Connector: what changed this year

The Connector will link I-26 in southwest Asheville to US 19/23/70 in northwest Asheville. The city lists five sections, from the I-40 interchange to a new bridge over the French Broad River and a rebuilt Riverside Drive. [11]

In April 2026, NCDOT closed the Riverside Drive entrance ramp to I-240/I-26 and the I-240/I-26 exit to Hill Street. Both closures are permanent. [7][8]

The posted workarounds: from Riverside Drive, keep going to Broadway Street to get on I-26 east. Headed for Riverside Drive or Hill Street, stay on I-26 to Exit 25, Broadway Street. [7]

On Aug. 2, the flyover from eastbound Patton Avenue to Westgate Parkway closed for good. The marked detour takes I-240 West/I-26 East to the Haywood Road exit, crosses over, and comes back on I-240 East/I-26 West to Exit 3B for Westgate. NCDOT says Westgate stays open to traffic. [5]

Hill Street closed on Sept. 13 and will stay closed through at least the end of 2027 while crews replace the Atkinson Street bridge over I-26 and build a roundabout. NCDOT sends local traffic to Clingman Avenue or Broadway Street to reach Riverside Drive. [6]

Our tip, not a rule: if your stop is in Montford or Hillcrest, plan to come in from Broadway or Clingman, and ask the receiver for current directions. GPS may still show the closed ramps. [6][7]

More interstate work coming

The next big piece is widening I-26/I-240 to six lanes from just north of I-40 to Haywood Road. In September 2026 the state approved about $280 million in construction money for it, based on a tentative letting estimate, spread from fiscal 2027 to 2031. [3]

The state also added a separate job in September to preserve 20 bridges on I-240, with construction money from fiscal 2027 through 2029. Our tip: watch DriveNC for I-240 lane closures once that work starts. [3]

South of town, four westbound I-26 lanes opened between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Exit 33, Brevard Road, in May 2026. The new interchange nearby was due around the turn of the year: NCDOT said January 2027 in May, and WLOS later reported the end of 2026. [10][22]

When NCDOT closed I-26 overnight for grinding and striping in July, it detoured traffic onto NC 280 (Airport Road) and US 25 (Hendersonville Road). Our tip: know those two roads in case I-26 south of town shuts at night again. [9]

Truck limits on local roads

NCDOT's truck restriction table, dated March 2024, lists several limits in Buncombe County. The one closest to town is NC 191: vehicles over 13,000 pounds are banned from I-240 to US 19-23 Business. [12]

US 74 Alternate has a 13,000-pound ban from I-40 east to the Henderson County line. NC 151 bars tractors with trailers longer than 30 feet between SR 1100 and the Henderson line. [12]

South of town, the table bars through vehicles with three or more axles on SR 3186 from US 25 east to US 25 Alternate, and on SR 3530 from NC 280 east to US 25. Three state roads near Mills Gap Road carry no-through-truck rules too. [12]

On I-26, trucks over 26,000 pounds with three or more axles may not use the left lane between a point east of Ferry Road and a point west of Long Shoals Road. [12]

Our advice: if your delivery address is on a restricted road, read the posted sign and ask the receiver how other trucks get in. We could not read Asheville's own city code, because the online code library blocked us, so we found no city truck route map. [12]

Road work on Asheville streets

A $5.25 million contract by APAC Atlantic is milling and repaving 36 sections of Buncombe secondary roads, about 24.65 miles in all. Work could start July 27, 2026, and the final finish date is Nov. 12, 2027. [1]

Two local projects slipped. The Amboy Road and Meadow Road upgrade, with a new French Broad bridge, was pushed back to fiscal 2033 for construction. Mills Gap Road from Hendersonville Road to Weston Road moved to fiscal 2028. [3][2]

In October, the state started design for new signals on Sweeten Creek Road (US 25A) at Sweeten Creek Industrial Park Road and at Medical Park Drive, and on Tunnel Road (US 70) at Maple Springs and Governors View roads. [4]

In Biltmore Village, the city is replacing curb ramps and walk signals on Hendersonville Road and Brooks Street, including the All Souls Crescent intersection. Our tip: allow extra time there. [4]

Rail crossing upgrades on the Blue Ridge Southern at Johnston Boulevard, Louisiana Avenue and Buck Shoals Road were pushed back in October to fiscal 2028 or 2029. [4]

East and west of town, the state is buying right of way for a new I-40 interchange at Blue Ridge Road in Black Mountain, and kept designing a Liberty Road interchange on I-40 in Candler. [3]

Downtown curb rules and stopping on the street

Downtown meters cover the Central Business District. They have a two-hour limit, cost $2.50 an hour, and must be paid 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The city says it never uses QR codes on its meters. [13]

To hold curb space, the city takes requests at least 72 hours ahead, including for oversized vehicles. As of July 2026, a loading zone closure is $35 per space per day, and an extended loading zone is $45. [14]

Taking a downtown space without approval is billed at $100 per space per day, or $200 for an accessible space. Parking Services is at 828-259-5792. [14][15]

Federal rules apply on city streets too. If you stop in a travel lane or on a shoulder for anything but a traffic stop, turn on your hazard flashers right away. Set out warning devices within 10 minutes. [20]

Inside a business or residential district, the triangles are not required unless lamps are needed and street lighting doesn't make the truck visible from 500 feet. [20]

Helene recovery and holiday traffic

Most roads are back. As of July 2026, NCDOT said more than 99% of Helene-damaged roads in western NC had reopened. The Amboy Road bridge over the French Broad is still on the state's Helene repair lists. [21][2]

The River Arts District is still rebuilding. In October 2026, WLOS reported River Mill Lofts had reopened 123 of its 253 apartments, with the next building due in November. Our tip: expect contractor trucks and tight curbs there. [18]

Christmas at Biltmore runs Nov. 3 through Jan. 10, 2027, per the estate's own page. The estate lists its address as 1 Lodge Street. Our tip: expect visitor traffic near the estate on evenings and weekends. [17]

The city has not posted a 2026 Holiday Parade notice that we could find. In 2025 the parade was on a Saturday in late November, with closures on Biltmore and Patton avenues from 8 a.m. to about 2 p.m. Plan around it once the date is set. [16]

Who ships here, and the nearest scales

New Belgium's Asheville brewery is at 21 Craven Street, and the company runs a 150,000-square-foot distribution building in Enka Commerce Park. [24][23]

Enka Commerce Park covers about 375 acres west of town, 1.7 miles from I-40, with its entrance on Sand Hill Road. Tenants include Schwan's, Wicked Weed, Smith Dray Line, Gladfelter and American Standard. [23]

The Asheville chamber counts more than 300 advanced manufacturers, naming GE Aviation, Linamar and Kearfott plus breweries Highland, Wicked Weed and Oskar Blues. East in Black Mountain, Ingles runs an 835,000-square-foot cold storage center. [26][27]

The Highway Patrol lists two fixed scales near town: Asheville, on I-40 about 12 miles west, at 828-667-2820, and Hendersonville, on I-26 about 7 miles north of that city, at 828-693-9712. [19]

We found no official list of truck parking downtown. Our advice, not a rule: stage at a truck stop such as TA Candler at I-40 Exit 37, and ask the receiver if you can wait on site. [30]
