Delivering in Durham, NC: truck routes, road work and local freight

A driver's guide to Durham and Durham County: the I-40 repaving job starting this fall, I-885 and US 15-501 plans, Alston Avenue and rail crossing work, the city's truck and curb rules, the big shippers, and the nearest scale, as of October 2026.

Rules, hours and road conditions change. Every fact below links to its source; check the source before you roll if it matters to your run.

The short version

Expect work zones on I-40 east of I-885 soon. NCDOT awarded a $21 million repaving contract there in September 2026, and the contractor can start Oct. 26. [4]

The big Durham road jobs after that are years out. NCDOT plans to award the I-885 widening in spring 2031, and the US 15-501 interchange at Garrett Road is set to start in October 2029. [5][6]

Durham's city code still applies on every run. Off a truck route, carry a bill of lading or other proof of where you are headed. Loading zones are only for active loading. [12][13]

The nearest permanent scale is at Hillsborough on I-40/I-85, west of town. Everything here is as of October 2026, so check DriveNC and call the receiver before a run. [9][25]

I-40 and I-885: what is coming

The I-40 contract covers 9.4 miles from east of I-885 to Wade Avenue in Raleigh, across Durham and Wake counties. It is pavement rehabilitation. The state's funding item also lists sign upgrades. [4][3]

Blythe Construction of Charlotte was the low bidder at about $21.05 million. Work can start Oct. 26, 2026. Most work is due by Nov. 15, 2028, with final completion May 14, 2029. [4]

More I-40 work is lined up behind it. In September the state added bridge preservation from east of I-885 to I-540, with construction money in fiscal 2028 to 2030. [3]

It also added a $60 million job to build a concrete median barrier and lay thin new pavement from east of I-885 to Wade Avenue, funded from fiscal 2031 to 2034. [3]

I-885 between I-40 and NC 147 is four lanes today. NCDOT is studying six or eight lanes over about 4.8 miles. Its schedule, last updated in April 2026, shows right of way starting in fall 2027 and a construction award in spring 2031. [5]

The state also keeps funding design for a westbound I-40 auxiliary lane from NC 55 (Apex Highway) to I-885. It added money in August, but no build date is set in the list. [2]

Closer in, a small pavement job on I-885 runs from I-40 to just north of T.W. Alexander Drive. The state added funds in July to $4.1 million already approved for construction. [1]

I-85, US 15-501 and southwest Durham

On I-85, the state has approved about $13.5 million to rehabilitate pavement from the Orange County line to US 15/501 in Durham, and added a little more in July. We could not confirm when crews will be out. [1]

Farther out, NCDOT is designing more lanes on I-85 from west of Orange Grove Road in Orange County to west of Sparger Road in Durham County. That job is still in design. [1]

At US 15-501 and Garrett Road, NCDOT will replace the signal with an interchange. US 15-501 will go over Garrett Road. Its project page says construction starts in October 2029, subject to change. [6]

The state put more money into right of way and utility moves there in September. The total cost estimate on the project page is about $82.6 million. [3][6]

The wider US 15-501 upgrade from Ephesus Church Road to I-40 was pushed back in August. Construction moved from fiscal 2030 to 2034. [2]

Nearby, two US 15/501 bridges over Cornwallis Road are in design for replacement. And in October the state started buying right of way for the Woodcroft Parkway extension from Garrett Road to NC 751 (Hope Valley Road). [1][4]

East Durham: Alston Avenue and the railroad crossings

Alston Avenue (NC 55) is being widened to four lanes with a median from NC 147 to Main Street. The job also replaces the Norfolk Southern railroad bridges over NC 55. [2]

More than $93 million had been approved for construction, and the state asked for $7 million more in August 2026. We found no finish date. [2]

During a 2025 overnight closure between Gann and Main streets, NCDOT sent southbound traffic to Main Street, Fayetteville Street and the Durham Freeway. [11]

Rail work will change some crossings. On the Norfolk Southern H-Line, the state is designing straighter track plus bridges so it can close the street-level crossings at Glover Road and Ellis Road. [2]

In September and October, the state signed agreements for a two-lane road bridge over the tracks on Glover Road and the closing of its at-grade crossing. [3][4]

Cornwallis Road is getting attention too. A grade separation at the Norfolk Southern crossing is in design, and the CSX crossing on Cornwallis is due to be resurfaced. New turn lanes are planned at Alston Avenue for fiscal 2028. [3]

Intersection work on freight roads

On NC 54 (Miami Boulevard) at Hopson Road, a new right-turn lane got more construction money in September because costs rose. [3]

Two jobs are listed as economic development projects. A roundabout at Teknika Parkway and Red Mill Road got $4 million for construction in July, then slipped to fiscal 2027. [1][3]

The other adds a left-turn lane and a signal at Snow Hill Road and Old Oxford Road, with construction set for fiscal 2028. [2][3]

On Cheek Road, the state will build left-turn lanes at both Junction Road intersections. Two developers are paying for the work. [2][3]

Near Duke, turn lanes at Erwin Road and Cornwallis Road moved to fiscal 2028. To the north, rumble stripes on US 501 (Roxboro Road) toward Person County were pushed to fiscal 2027. [3][1]

Durham's truck and curb rules, briefly

Our Raleigh and Triangle guide covers these in more detail. Durham counts a truck as three or more axles, or two axles with a GVWR of 18,000 pounds or more. [12]

Trucks must get to the nearest truck route and stay on it until the turn closest to the stop. Off a route, lacking proof of origin and destination is a misdemeanor. [12]

Running heavier than a posted weight limit, or with more axles than allowed in a posted area, is an infraction under Sec. 66-119. [12]

At the curb, trucks must park parallel and within 12 inches of the curb unless angle parking is marked. An angle-parked truck must leave two 12-foot lanes open, or one on a one-way street. [13]

Loading zones are only for active loading or unloading. Vehicles wider than 6.5 feet may not park on city streets from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. unless they are loading. [13]

On state roads, the NCDOT table bans through trucks on NC 157 from I-85 to the Orange County line. SR 1902 and SR 1904 bar through trucks over 13,000 pounds from the Wake line to Carpenter Pond Road. [15]

Downtown, the Gregson Street railroad bridge is posted at 12 feet 4 inches. The 11foot8 site logged its 187th crash in June 2025, a moving truck that ran the warning light. [16][10]

Who ships here

Novartis broke ground on Dec. 11, 2025, in Durham. Two new Durham buildings will make biologics and do sterile packaging, and its Durham gene therapy site is expanding. [7]

Novartis says the hub should open by the end of 2028. The state's 2025 release tied the project to $771 million and 700 jobs by 2030. [7][24]

Lovett's Durham Logistics Center at 1716 Camden Avenue fronts the I-85 and I-885 interchange. The 351,030-square-foot building was finished in early 2026, and the developer's page still showed it all available in October. [8]

Treyburn Corporate Park covers 5,300 acres in north Durham County, with AISIN, bioMerieux, Corning, Merck and Novo Nordisk. About three quarters of Research Triangle Park's 7,000 acres are in Durham County. [18]

Up I-85, Food Lion runs a distribution center in Butner. The state's food distribution warehouse is at 1015 Food Distribution Drive in Creedmoor, off Exit 191. [19][20]

Scales and parking near Durham

The Highway Patrol lists the Hillsborough station on I-40/I-85, about 15 miles west of Durham near Efland. It has four fixed scales plus ramp and highway weigh-in-motion. The phone is 919-563-6108. [9]

We found no official truck parking inside Durham. NCDOT's 2023 parking study ranked the Pilot at Mebane first and Petro Mebane third among the state's busiest private truck stops. [21]

Petro Mebane is at I-40/I-85 Exit 157 with 285 spaces. Love's in Mebane, at Exit 152, lists 82 truck spaces. [22][23]

Our advice, not a rule: with the overnight street ban, ask the receiver before dispatch whether you can stage on its lot. Then check DriveNC for closures on I-40 and Alston Avenue before you roll. [13][25]
