Delivering and hauling in Hickory, NC: I-40, US 321 and the cable plants

A driver's guide to Hickory and the Catawba Valley: the I-40 and US 321 exits, NCDOT work as of October 2026, the fiber optic cable plants and food warehouses that ship here, truck restrictions, rail, and where to rest.

Rules, hours and road conditions change. Every fact below links to its source; check the source before you roll if it matters to your run.

The short version

Hickory sits on I-40 between Morganton and Statesville. US 321 crosses I-40 here, running north to Lenoir and Boone and south to Lincolnton and Gastonia. [16][11]

The area is best known for furniture, but fiber optic cable is now the bigger story. CommScope and Corning each employ more than 1,000 people here, according to NCDOT. [11]

Prysmian and US Conec announced big expansions in 2026, so expect construction loads now and more cable freight later. [1][4]

Plan around US 321 between Hickory and Lenoir. NCDOT has intersection jobs running in Caldwell County and a widening that's expected to start with a contract award in 2027. [19][20][21]

Everything here is as of October 2026. Road work, plant plans and local rules change, so call the receiver and check DriveNC before you roll. [17][31]

Getting in: the I-40 exits

In Burke County, I-40 has exits for Morganton at 103 (US 64) and 105 (NC 18), then Drexel, Valdese, Rutherford College and Hildebran between Exits 107 and 119. [16]

Exit 123 is the big one. It's a cloverleaf with collector-distributor roads. 123A takes US 321 south toward Lincolnton and Gastonia. 123B takes US 321 north toward Hickory, Lenoir and Boone. [16]

Past that, Exit 125 is Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard, Exit 126 goes to US 70, and Exit 128 is Fairgrove Church Road in Conover. [16]

Exit 132 is NC 16 for Newton, Conover and Taylorsville. The old Exit 131 to NC 16 closed for good by 2008, so ignore it if an old map shows it. [16]

East of town, Exit 133 is Rock Barn Road, Exit 135 is Claremont and Exit 138 is NC 10 at Catawba. Iredell County starts after that. [16]

These exit numbers come from a public exit list, not an NCDOT page. Our tip: get the receiver's exit number in writing, since several plants sit between two exits. [16]

US 321 north to Lenoir: what's changing

NCDOT calls US 321 north of I-40 a vital freight and tourism link to the Boone area. Much of it was built in the 1950s and early 1960s and hasn't had a major upgrade since. [11]

The road has a crash problem too. NCDOT counted 3,961 crashes between Hickory and Lenoir from February 2014 to January 2024. [11]

The fix is project U-4700. It would widen 13.9 miles of US 321 to six lanes, from just north of US 70 in Hickory to Southwest Boulevard in Lenoir. NCDOT lists it at $386 million, with two segments still unfunded. [17]

The first segment runs from US 70 to US 321 Alternate in Granite Falls. It replaces both US 321 bridges over the Catawba River, built in 1962 and 1983, which NCDOT rates structurally deficient. [11][19]

As of June 2026, NCDOT expected to award that contract in 2027. Its federal grant application says construction slipped to state fiscal year 2028, with more delays possible. [19][11]

For now, the bridges carry all the traffic. Our tip: if you have a choice of times, cross the Catawba River on US 321 outside rush hour. [11]

Other road work as of October 2026

In Hudson, US 321 at Mission Road and Lower Cedar Valley Road is being rebuilt as a reduced conflict intersection. Work began Feb. 16, 2026, and should finish in fall 2027. [21]

Lane closures on that job are allowed only at night. NCDOT has used temporary signals on US 321 near the intersection. [21][19]

Next up are US 321 at Mount Herman Road and Pine Mountain Road, also in Caldwell County. Branch Civil won the $25.7 million contract in September 2026. Work can start Oct. 26, 2026, and the final finish date is April 30, 2030. [20]

In Catawba County, about 8 miles of US 321 Business from the Lincoln County line to NC 16 are being resurfaced. The $4.8 million job runs to fall 2027, with lane closures limited at rush hour and on holidays. [22]

In Hickory, NC 127 between First Avenue SE and Second Avenue SE is getting turn lanes, concrete islands and new signals. The $8.5 million contract is due to finish in spring 2027. [23]

NCDOT also delayed safety upgrades at several Norfolk Southern crossings in Hickory, Long View and Conover, including NC 16 (First Avenue) in Conover, to fiscal year 2029. [20]

We found no funded I-40 widening in Catawba or Burke County as of October 2026. The last big I-40 job we found here was a 2018 resurfacing between Conover and Statesville. [25][20]

Who ships and receives here

Prysmian announced a more than $1 billion expansion of its Claremont plant in August 2026. It adds 975,000 square feet, 385 jobs and a new glass plant, and doubles fiber optic output. [1]

US Conec, which makes parts for fiber connectors, announced a $149.7 million Hickory expansion with 224 new jobs in October 2026. A 221,000-square-foot building is under construction in Fairgrove Business Park. [4]

Corning Optical Communications added a $150 million, 200-job expansion in Hickory in 2021. In October 2025 it announced another at least $170 million and 132 jobs at Trivium Corporate Center in southeast Hickory. [8][33]

CommScope was founded in Hickory and announced 250 more jobs at its Catawba County cable plants in 2023. Amphenol bought that business in January 2026, and it still uses the CommScope name. [6][7]

Food freight runs here too. NCDOT calls Merchants Distributors the major grocery distributor for independent stores in western North Carolina. It announced a $35 million perishables expansion in 2022. [11][12]

In Lenoir, Wild Fork Foods opened an 80,000-square-foot frozen meat plant in 2023. That's reefer work. [34]

Furniture still ships from the valley. Our furniture and textile guide covers the job counts, recent closures and the Caldwell County truck bans. [11]

None of these plants publish dock hours or gate rules that we found. Get the gate, the window and any construction-entrance rules from the load tender or the receiver. [1][4][33]

Truck limits and posted bridges

NCDOT's truck restriction table, dated March 5, 2024, has no rows for Catawba County. [30]

Burke County has several. NC 126 bans through tractor-trailers over 30 feet, and any over 48 feet, between NC 181 and the McDowell County line. [30]

In the Morganton area, London and Catawba Streets (SR 1147) have a 13,000-pound limit between US 70 and Turkey Tail Lane. In Valdese, Praley Street SW (SR 1733) has a 20,000-pound limit. [30]

In Caldwell County, NC 90 is closed to tractor-trailers between SR 1358 and SR 1352. The NC 268 and US 221 bans are covered in our furniture guide. [30]

NCDOT's Oct. 9, 2026 table of posted primary-route bridges lists one in Catawba County: First Street SE over Barger Branch, at 24 tons for a single vehicle. Its map coordinates point to the south Hickory area. [29]

In Burke County, US 70 over Silver Creek west of Morganton is posted at 39 tons single vehicle and 43 tons tractor-trailer. Caldwell County had no posted primary-route bridges. [29]

We couldn't read Hickory's city code, so we can't list its truck routes or parking rules. NCDOT's ordinance manual says towns can't ban trucks from state highway system roads, but city street signs still apply. [36]

Rail in the valley

Norfolk Southern runs the east-west main line through Morganton, Hickory, Long View and Conover. Its grade crossings show up in NCDOT's October 2026 project list. [20][26]

The Caldwell County Railroad is a short line that crosses US 321 at grade just south of the Catawba River. NCDOT says about four trains a week use it. [11]

It runs about 17 miles between Hickory and Lenoir and meets Norfolk Southern in Hickory. Our tip: on US 321 south of the river, be ready for a train at that crossing. [27][11]

The Alexander Railroad, sometimes mixed up with this line, runs between Statesville and Taylorsville and doesn't reach Hickory. [28]

Rest areas and a call-ahead checklist

The nearest public rest areas are the paired I-40 sites at mile marker 136 in Catawba County, about 10 miles east of Hickory. Our I-40 parking guide lists their truck spaces. [31]

We didn't find an official list of truck stops at the Hickory exits. Don't plan to stage on a city street without checking the posted signs first. [36][31]

The High Point furniture market isn't in Hickory, but its dates help with planning. Spring 2027 runs April 10 to 14, and fall 2027 runs Oct. 23 to 27. [37]

Before a Hickory run, check DriveNC for US 321 work in Hudson and at the Catawba River, and for US 321 Business lane closures in Catawba County. [21][22][19]

Heading north on US 321 toward Blowing Rock and Boone? Read our mountain winter and leaf season guides first, since truck rules change in the high country. [11]
