Delivering and hauling in Mooresville and the Lake Norman area, NC

A driver's guide to Mooresville and the Lake Norman towns: the I-77 exits, NC 150 and Brawley School Road work as of October 2026, the express lanes, who ships here, truck limits, posted bridges, rail, scales and rest areas.

Rules, hours and road conditions change. Every fact below links to its source; check the source before you roll if it matters to your run.

The short version

Mooresville sits on I-77 between Charlotte and Statesville, just after the interstate crosses Lake Norman. Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson line the same interstate on the Mecklenburg side of the lake. [3]

This stretch is slow. The trucking research group ATRI ranked I-77 near Lake Norman the 31st worst truck bottleneck in the country in 2026, with peak truck speeds under 27 mph. [12]

NCDOT is rebuilding the I-77 interchange at NC 150 (Exit 36) and widening Brawley School Road at Exit 35. Expect night lane closures and ramp detours. [6][9]

Everything here is as of October 2026. Road work, plant plans and local rules change, so call the receiver and check DriveNC before you roll. [4][5]

Getting in: the I-77 exits

Heading north from Charlotte, Exit 23 is Gilead Road in Huntersville and Exit 25 is NC 73 toward Concord and Huntersville. [3]

Exit 28 is US 21 south (Catawba Avenue) in Cornelius. It became a diverging diamond in August 2013. Exit 30 is Griffith Street in Davidson. [3]

After the Lake Norman causeway, the Mooresville exits are 31 (Langtree Road), 33 (US 21 north), 35 (Brawley School Road) and 36 (NC 150 toward Lincolnton). [3]

NCDOT's 2026 ramp contract calls Exit 33 Williamson Road, so you may see either name on paperwork. North of Mooresville, Exit 42 is US 21 and NC 115 at Troutman. [3][4]

The exit list also shows a future Exit 38 at Cornelius Road (listed as funded) and a future Exit 27 at Westmoreland Road (unfunded). We didn't find an NCDOT schedule for either one as of October 2026. [3]

These exit numbers come from a public exit list, not an NCDOT page. Our tip: get the receiver's exit in writing, since US 21 has two exits here, 28 and 33. [3]

NC 150 and the Exit 36 rebuild

NCDOT is widening about 15 miles of NC 150, from the NC 16 Bypass in Catawba County to just west of US 21 in Mooresville. The plan includes a better I-77 interchange. [5]

The 5.5 miles from Greenwood Road to US 21 are under construction. That piece and the interchange are funded at $249 million. The rest has no funding yet. [5]

Starting July 14, 2025, NCDOT permanently closed the right lanes of I-77 approaching NC 150 in both directions. Two lanes each way and the NC 150 ramps stayed open. [6]

The new bridge goes in by phases, eastbound first and then westbound. In the end, traffic moves onto a ten-lane structure 160 feet wide and the old bridge comes out. [6]

The job also moves utilities and traffic signals, rebuilds storm drains and adds walls between the work zone and traffic. [8]

In March 2026, the NC 150 ramp to I-77 North closed overnight for drainage work. From NC 150 East, the detour used Williamson Road, Brawley School Road and Exit 35. [7]

In June 2026, Talbert Road just north of NC 150 closed at night, with a detour on NC 150, Corporate Center Drive and Oates Road. Our tip: if your stop is off Talbert, ask about closures. [8]

NCDOT's project page was last updated in February 2025 and gives no finish date. Check DriveNC for current closures. [5]

Brawley School Road and the 2026 ramp work

Brawley School Road is being widened to a four-lane divided road between I-77 (Exit 35) and US 21. It will have signals, U-turn bulb-outs, sidewalks and bike lanes. [9]

WSOC put the contract at $34.8 million for a little over a mile. NCDOT said in December 2025 that all work should finish in early 2029. [9][10]

Part of that job closed West Wilson Avenue between US 21 and the Country Club Apartments entrance. It reopened on Dec. 8, 2025, ahead of schedule. [9]

Our tip: U-turn designs can be tight for a 53-foot trailer. Ask the receiver which way trucks should come in. [9]

Separately, King Asphalt holds a $5.2 million contract to rebuild I-77 ramps. Around the lake, it covers Exit 25 (NC 73), Exit 30 (Griffith Street) and Exit 33. [4]

Ramp and lane closures for that job run at night, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Work could start in late June 2026 and is due to finish in spring 2027. [4]

Express lanes and the bottleneck

The I-77 express lanes end at Exit 36 in Mooresville. Tractor-trailers can't use them. Neither can vehicles pulling trailers with two or more axles, or anything over 53 feet. [3][11]

So rigs stay in the free general lanes through Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson. Our I-77 express lanes guide covers the rules for two-axle trucks and hotshots. [11]

ATRI measured trucks near Lake Norman at about 36 mph on average, 27 mph at peak and 41 mph off-peak. Peak speeds fell 5.6 percent from the year before. [12]

Our tip: plan pickups and deliveries outside rush hour when the receiver allows it, and build in time for the Exit 36 work zone. [6][12]

Who ships and receives here

Lowe's lists its business address with the SEC as 1000 Lowes Blvd. in Mooresville. That is the company's headquarters office, not a store or warehouse we could confirm. [13]

Corvid Technologies, a defense contractor, plans to add 423 jobs and spend $95 million in Mooresville. The state announced it on Oct. 13, 2026. [14]

Corvid will build a 400,000-square-foot plant at its headquarters campus for vehicle launch systems. The company says its manufacturing space grew from 8,000 to 800,000 square feet in about two and a half years. [14]

Our tip: that means construction freight first, then inbound parts and outbound product. [14]

BestCo makes over-the-counter drugs and supplements in Mooresville. It announced 141 jobs in 2019, then a $177 million, 394-job expansion in 2022 that added production and packaging. [15][16]

Mooresville Business Park East got a 2017 state grant to extend Manufacturers Boulevard by 900 feet. The grant record expected the park to bring 1,000 jobs. [17]

We didn't find dock hours or gate rules for any of these sites. Get the gate, the window and any check-in steps from the load tender or the receiver. [13][14][16]

Truck limits and posted bridges

NCDOT's Oct. 9, 2026 table of posted primary-route bridges has no Mooresville rows. All three Iredell rows have map points in Statesville, covered in our Statesville guide. [1]

One Mecklenburg row is near the lake. South Street over an unnamed creek is posted at 38 tons single and 40 tons tractor-trailer. Its map point falls in the Davidson area. [1]

NCDOT's truck restriction table, dated March 5, 2024, bans trucks on Overhead Bridge Road from NC 150 to Mazeppa Road, in two rows that meet at Oliphant Road. [2]

The same table bars trucks with three or more axles from Mayes Road between NC 115 (Statesville Road) and NC 73, on the Mecklenburg side of the lake. [2]

The table has no Iredell rows for NC 150, US 21, NC 115 or Brawley School Road. Those roads still have work zones and any local signs. [2]

We couldn't read Mooresville's town code, so we can't list its truck routes or parking rules. NCDOT says towns can't ban trucks from state highway system roads, but town street signs still apply. [22]

Rail through Mooresville

Norfolk Southern's O-Line runs from Charlotte into Mooresville. A 2024 federal filing described it as about 29 miles through Mecklenburg and Iredell. [18]

Charlotte bought about 22 miles of it in September 2024 for a future commuter line. The price was $74 million, and Norfolk Southern keeps its current freight service on the line. [19]

The deal leaves room to extend passenger service into Mooresville and Iredell only if those places allow it. Our tip: watch for grade crossings near downtown Mooresville. [18][19]

Scales, rest areas and a call-ahead checklist

The Highway Patrol lists no weigh station on I-77 near the lake. The nearest are Statesville on I-40 and Charlotte on I-85. The only I-77 station is near Mount Airy. [20]

There's no rest area in the Lake Norman stretch. The closest are the I-77 rest areas at mile marker 58 in northern Iredell, both directions. Our rest area guide lists their truck spaces. [21]

Before a Mooresville or Lake Norman run, check DriveNC for the Exit 36 and Brawley School Road work, the ramp closures and the Overhead Bridge Road and Mayes Road truck bans. [2][4][6][9]
