Delivering and hauling in Sanford, NC: US 1, US 421 and the new plants
A driver's guide to Sanford and Lee County: the US 1 and US 421 freeways, NCDOT work as of October 2026, Caterpillar and the new STERIS and Kyowa Kirin plants, truck limits, the December parade route, and where to rest.
The short version
Sanford is the seat of Lee County, about 40 miles southwest of Raleigh. Most trucks reach it on the US 1 freeway or the US 421 bypass. [11][25]
It's a manufacturing town. Caterpillar is one of the county's three largest employers, and the state's 2025 profile lists it with more than 1,000 workers. [34][11]
Two big projects were announced in 2026: a STERIS campus with its own rail spur, and a new Caterpillar plant worth about $1 billion. Expect construction loads first and new freight later. [7][10][11]
NCDOT has three road jobs running or due in the county: two resurfacing contracts on US 1, US 421 and US 15-501, and the NC 42 widening toward Broadway. [1][2][3]
Everything here is as of October 2026. Plans and lane closures change, so call the receiver and check DriveNC before you roll. [1][2]
Getting in: US 1, US 421 and the bypass
US 1 is a freeway through Chatham and Lee counties. It links Sanford to Apex and Raleigh to the north and to Southern Pines to the south. [25]
Coming south from Raleigh, the Moncure exit is 79. Exit 71 is US 15-501 and NC 87. Exit 70 is the cloverleaf with the US 421 bypass. [25]
Below that, Exit 69 serves US 421 Business on North Horner Boulevard and Burns Drive. Exit 68 is Spring Lane and Exit 66 is NC 42 at Wicker Street. [25]
These numbers come from a roads enthusiast guide last updated in 2020, not an NCDOT page. Our tip: get the receiver's exit in writing. [25]
US 421 skirts Sanford on a freeway bypass of about 12 miles. It heads northwest toward Siler City and Greensboro and southeast toward Lillington and I-95. [25]
US 421 Business is the old route through town along Horner Boulevard. It's about 10 miles long and runs past downtown, so expect signals and local traffic. [26][25]
Road work as of October 2026
In November 2025, NCDOT gave S.T. Wooten a $3.6 million contract to repave two highways. The work has until summer 2027 to finish. [1]
One piece is about 3.6 miles of US 421, from the Chatham County line to north of the US 1/15-501 interchange. It includes the ramps at the US 421 and Business 421 interchange north of Sanford. [1]
The other is about 4 miles of US 1, from the Moore County line to Wildlife Road. The job adds rumble strips and new high-visibility lane markings. [1]
In February 2026, NCDOT gave Highland Paving a $3 million contract for about 20 miles of paving, due by fall 2027. [2]
That one covers US 15-501 from the Moore County line to the US 1/15-501 junction, US 1 near Tramway, and 14 secondary roads, including Buckhorn and Blacks Chapel roads. [2]
We found no 2026 update on whether either crew has started. Look for nighttime lane closures on DriveNC before a Sanford run. [1][2]
NCDOT is also widening NC 42, known locally as Broadway Road, between Sanford and Broadway. Work began in fall 2023 and is due in spring 2028. [3]
That job has brought weekend closures for pipe work. In November 2025, the detour used NC 42 (Avents Ferry Road), Longstreet Road and Woodland Trails Road. [3]
Who ships and receives here
Caterpillar has built compact equipment in Sanford since 1999. In May 2026, ABC11 reported it planned to hire 600 production workers there. [12][14]
On Sept. 30, 2026, Caterpillar announced about $1 billion for a new Sanford plant to build more compact track loaders and telehandlers. [11][12]
Spectrum News reported local incentives of about $40 million from the city and $46 million from Lee County. Caterpillar didn't give a job count or an opening date. [11]
Caterpillar also has North Carolina plants in Clayton, Goldsboro and Winston-Salem, the same report noted, so some loads may run between them. [11]
STERIS chose Helix Innovation Park in Sanford for a $600 million campus with 335 jobs, the state announced on Aug. 5, 2026. [7]
The 600,000-square-foot site will hold manufacturing, labs, a warehouse and distribution. The state's release gave no opening date. [7]
Kyowa Kirin announced a biologics plant of up to $530 million on a 75-acre Sanford campus in June 2024. It aimed to be fully running by 2027. [17]
The plan called for a 171,700-square-foot building with two production reactors and more than 100 jobs, backed by $10 million in performance-based incentives. [17]
We found no 2026 update on Kyowa Kirin. If you're quoting a load there, confirm the receiving address and dock hours first. [17]
Besides Caterpillar, the state's 2025 profile names Wyeth Holdings and Lee County Schools as the county's other employers with more than 1,000 workers. [34]
Rail at Helix Innovation Park
The North Carolina Railroad Company is putting up to $600,000 into design and construction of rail on the STERIS campus. [10]
STERIS plans to receive and ship at least 160 rail cars a year by 2031, the railroad says. That's on top of truck freight, not instead of it. [10]
The state's release lists Norfolk Southern, NCDOT's Rail Division and the NC Railroad Company among the project's partners. [7]
Our tip: once the spur opens, expect some drayage between the rail siding and other Sanford plants. Ask the shipper who handles transloads. [10]
Truck limits and local rules
NCDOT's statewide truck restriction table, last updated March 5, 2024, has no rows for Lee County. [23]
Nearby, Moore County bans through trucks with three or more axles on NC 5 between Aberdeen and Pinehurst. [23]
In Harnett County, SR 1703 bans trucks over 26,000 pounds between US 421/NC 55 and Denim Drive, per the same table. [23]
NCDOT's posted-bridges table for primary routes, dated Oct. 9, 2026, lists no bridges in Lee County. It doesn't cover secondary roads, so check NCDOT's posted-bridge maps for back-road deliveries. [22]
NCDOT's ordinance manual says towns have no statutory authority to ban trucks from state highway routes. City streets are a different matter. [24]
We couldn't read Sanford's city code, so we can't tell you its truck routes, parking rules or loading zone hours. Watch the posted signs and ask the receiver. [24]
Downtown in December
Sanford's 2026 Christmas parade will use a new route, The Rant reported Sept. 2. City Council approved the street closures on Sept. 1. [27]
Downtown Sanford Inc. asked for the change. If you deliver to a downtown shop in December, ask the receiver about the parade night. [27]
The route starts at Steele and Carthage streets, then runs along Carthage, Vance, Wicker, Moore and back on Carthage near Depot Park. [27]
The change makes room for NCDOT work planned on the west end of downtown. The date and closure times weren't in the report, so check before a December delivery downtown. [27]
That NCDOT work is the Carthage Street project, U-5709. Its 2018 plan calls for a raised median and roundabouts at Fire Tower Road, Fields Drive and Wicker Street. [31]
NCDOT's tentative letting list puts it in September 2027 at an estimated $22.2 million. That means construction isn't under way yet. [30]
Rest, parking and a call-ahead checklist
NCDOT lists no rest area on US 1 in North Carolina. The nearest public ones are on I-95 and I-40, outside Lee County, so plan your break before you exit. [38]
We didn't find an official list of truck stops or truck parking in Lee County. Don't plan to stage on a city street without checking the signs. [38][24]
Hauling past Moncure? The VinFast site there is tied up in a state lawsuit filed in May 2026, so it isn't a freight stop. Our Toyota battery plant guide has more. [32]
Before a Sanford run, check DriveNC for US 1, US 421 and US 15-501 paving, and for Broadway Road closures on NC 42. [1][2][3]
Ask the receiver which exit to use, whether the dock is inside a new construction site, and where you can wait if you're early. [7][11]
