Rules, hours and road conditions change. Every fact below links to its source; check the source before you roll if it matters to your run.

The short version

Statesville is where I-40 and I-77 cross, north of Charlotte. NCDOT finished rebuilding that interchange in 2024, so old maps and old habits may be wrong. [3][17]

Big shippers here include a Sherwin-Williams paint plant, a Bobcat factory campus of more than 1 million square feet and a Lowe's distribution center. [10][11][12]

Three Statesville bridges on the state's posted list carry weight limits, and one is only 10 tons for a single truck. Check them before you route through town. [1]

Everything here is as of October 2026. Road work, plant plans and local rules change, so call the receiver and check DriveNC before you roll. [6][15]

Getting in: the I-40 and I-77 exits

On I-40 from the west, the Iredell exits start at 141 (Sharon School Road), then 144 (Old Mountain Road) and 146 (Stamey Farm Road). [16]

Exit 148 is US 64 and NC 90 for West Statesville and Taylorsville. Exit 150 is NC 115 for downtown and North Wilkesboro. Exit 151 is US 21 for East Statesville and Harmony. [16]

Exit 152 is I-77. East of it, the old Exit 153 to US 64 closed for good in 2012. Use Exit 154 (Old Mocksville Road) or Exit 162 for US 64 instead. [16]

On I-77, Mooresville has Exits 31 to 36. Exit 42 is US 21 and NC 115 at Troutman, and Exit 45 is Amity Hill Road. [17]

Exit 49A is US 70 (Garner Bagnal Boulevard) and 49B goes downtown. Exit 50 is East Broad Street and Exit 51 is I-40. [17]

North of I-40, Exit 54 is US 21 at Turnersburg, Exit 59 is Tomlin Mill Road at Olin, and Exit 65 is NC 901 for Harmony and Union Grove. [17]

These exit numbers come from public exit lists, not an NCDOT page. Our tip: get the receiver's exit in writing, since US 21 and US 64 each have more than one. [16][17]

The I-40/I-77 interchange

The old interchange dated to the 1960s. NCDOT rebuilt it in two phases, starting in 2012 and finishing in 2024. [3]

The main contract was $260 million. It widened about 7.4 miles of both interstates from four lanes to eight and built a partial turbine interchange. [4]

Part of the design is a set of collector-distributor lanes from I-40 East to I-77. I-40 also crosses a US 21 collector-distributor loop here. [3]

The work also widened East Broad Street from Vine Street to Signal Hill Drive and replaced bridges on US 64 and Broad Street. [3]

On I-77 southbound, Exit 51 splits into 51A for I-40 East and 51B for I-40 West. Our tip: pick your lane early. [17]

Our I-77 express lanes guide covers the rest of the corridor south to Charlotte. [4][17]

Road work as of October 2026

I-77 is being repaved for about 12 miles, from Exit 36 (NC 150) to just south of Exit 49 (US 70). Maymead holds the $21.4 million contract. [5][6]

That job adds rumble strips, new guardrail, ramp paving and a friction surface that cuts down on spray. Lane closures run at night, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. [5]

In May 2026, NCDOT closed the I-77 South on-ramp from South Main Street (US 21) in Troutman for a weekend to repave it. The contract was due to finish in fall 2026. [6]

The signed detour for that closure sent drivers north on I-77 to Exit 45 (Amity Hill Road) to turn around. Check DriveNC for any repeat closure. [6]

US 70 is being resurfaced from Nabors Road to the Rowan County line under a $6.9 million contract. It started as early as March 30, 2026, and runs to fall 2027. [7]

That contract also covers 36 smaller roads, including Red Chimney Road and Mackwood Road off NC 115. Lane closures are limited at rush hour and on holidays. [7]

A 2025 contract covered US 70 from Wall Street to Nabors Road in Statesville, plus about 4 miles of I-77 between mile markers 52.6 and 56.7. Both were due to finish in fall 2026. [8]

In Mooresville, NC 150 is being widened, and the I-77 interchange at NC 150 is being improved. NCDOT says the 5.5 miles from Greenwood Road to US 21 are under construction. [20]

Who ships and receives here

Sherwin-Williams has made paint in Statesville since 1993. In 2022 it announced a $324 million, 183-job expansion with four new rail spurs and an 800,000-square-foot distribution and fleet center. [9][10]

The expanded plant opened with a ribbon-cutting on Sept. 30, 2026. A trade report calls it the company's largest North American plant. [10]

Bobcat finished a $70 million expansion in Statesville in 2022. The campus is more than 1 million square feet on over 150 acres, with new shipping and receiving docks. [11]

Bobcat builds mini track loaders, compact tractors, mowers, generators, light towers and air compressors here. In 2022 it had nearly 600 workers in Statesville and planned up to 250 more. [11]

Lowe's runs an Iredell County distribution center. A 2019 state permit notice lists the company's address on Tomlin Mill Road in Statesville, which is I-77 Exit 59. [12][17]

We didn't find dock hours or gate rules for any of these sites. Get the gate, the window and any check-in steps from the load tender or the receiver. [9][11][12]

Truck limits and posted bridges

NCDOT's Oct. 9, 2026 table of posted primary-route bridges has three Iredell rows. The table doesn't name the town, but the map points for all three fall in Statesville. [1]

South Elm Street over the Norfolk Southern tracks is posted at 20 tons for a single vehicle and 27 tons for a tractor-trailer. [1]

Monroe Street over the Norfolk Southern tracks is posted at 29 tons single and 35 tons tractor-trailer. [1]

Museum Road over Gregory Creek is the tightest, at 10 tons single and 14 tons tractor-trailer. Fourteen tons is 28,000 pounds, far under a loaded rig. [1]

NCDOT's truck restriction table, dated March 5, 2024, bans trucks on Overhead Bridge Road from NC 150 to Mazeppa Road, in two rows that meet at Oliphant Road. [2]

The same table lists truck lane rules on northbound and southbound I-77 couplets in Iredell from 2019. Their details aren't in the table text, so watch the signs. [2]

The table has no Iredell rows for US 70, US 21, NC 115 or US 64. Those roads still have to clear the posted bridges and any local signs. [2][1]

We couldn't read Statesville's city code, so we can't list its truck routes or parking rules. NCDOT says towns can't ban trucks from state highway system roads, but city street signs still apply. [22]

Rail through Statesville

Norfolk Southern's line between Salisbury and Asheville runs through Statesville and Hickory. In early 2026, NCDOT studied putting passenger trains back on it, at about $665 million, with no funding yet. [18]

The Alexander Railroad runs 18 miles from Statesville to Taylorsville and connects with Norfolk Southern in Statesville. Its shippers have moved grain, lumber, plastics, fertilizer and propane. [19]

Sherwin-Williams added four rail spurs in its expansion. A 2026 report says they improve material handling and logistics at the plant. [9][10]

Two of the posted bridges above cross Norfolk Southern tracks. Our tip: plan for trains and grade crossings near downtown. [1][18]

Scales, rest areas and a call-ahead checklist

The Highway Patrol's Statesville weigh station is on I-40 about 6 miles west of town, with two fixed scales. The phone is 704-878-4249. Our weigh station guide has more. [13]

The Patrol lists no other fixed scale in Rowan, Catawba or Yadkin County. The next one toward Charlotte is on I-85 southwest of the city. [13]

The I-77 rest areas are in both directions in northern Iredell. NCDOT lists them at mile marker 58 and DriveNC at mile 57. Our rest area guide lists their truck spaces. [14][15]

We found no I-40 rest area in Iredell. The nearest is at mile marker 136 in Catawba County, covered in our Hickory guide. [14]

Carolina BalloonFest ran Oct. 16 to 18, 2026, at 260 Hangar Drive in Statesville, and it sold out. We didn't find 2027 dates. Our tip: expect heavy local traffic on festival weekend. [21]

Before a Statesville run, check DriveNC for I-77 and US 70 work, and check the posted bridges if your stop is near downtown. [1][5][7][15]
