The short version

NCDOT said the last eastern pieces of the Northern Beltway would open on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026. That links US 421, I-40 and I-74 around the east side of downtown. [5]

US 52 is the corridor to watch this fall. A $19 million job to replace the University Parkway bridge over US 52 was awarded in June, and the contractor planned to move in starting in October. [1][7]

South of downtown, an I-285/US 52 pavement and bridge job was set to start in October 2026, with weekend lane closures expected. On I-40, the NC 109 interchange is being rebuilt through early 2030. [7]

There is no fixed state scale in Forsyth County. Everything here is as of October 2026, so check DriveNC and call the receiver before a run. [9][21]

The Northern Beltway: what opened and what is next

NCDOT's Sept. 18 release covered two pieces of about 3 miles in total. One runs from US 421 to just south of I-40, with a multilevel I-40 interchange. The other runs from there to I-74. [5]

NCDOT said the opening came two months ahead of schedule. With it, I-74 is complete through Forsyth County to where it meets US 52 north of the city. [5]

Expect new patterns on I-40 east of town. The project widened about 2.8 miles of I-40 to three lanes each way, built a diverging diamond at Kernersville Road, and rebuilt about 2 miles of NC 192, the old I-74 connector. [5]

Crews were not fully gone as of September. The state's update listed the two sections at 92 and 99 percent complete, with contract completion dates in spring 2027. [7]

The western half of the loop is years away. The section from NC 67 (Reynolda Road) to south of US 52 is set to go to contract in October 2029. The piece from Robinhood Road to NC 67 is set for June 2032. [7][2]

The other western pieces, from south of I-40 up to Robinhood Road, are funded for design only. NCDOT added design money for the Reynolda Road and Robinhood Road pieces in July and August 2026. [7][1][2]

US 52 and I-285: bridges and repaving

The University Parkway (SR 4000) bridge over US 52 dates to 1962. NCDOT plans to keep traffic moving with staged work that starts on the west side. [6]

Blythe Construction of Charlotte was low bidder at about $19 million, above the $16.1 million estimate. Most work is due by July 15, 2029, and final completion is Jan. 11, 2030. [1]

Next door, the Hanes Mill Road widening was 67 percent done in September. The eastbound bridge over US 52 was finished, and crews planned to mill and repave US 52 there in late September. The target is late spring 2027. [7]

The I-285/US 52/NC 8 job runs from Old US 52 at Exit 92 in Davidson County to South Main Street at Exit 103 in Forsyth. Gosalia Concrete Constructors holds the $7.1 million contract, due Sept. 15, 2028. [7]

More US 52 bridges are in design. The Third, Fourth and Fifth Street bridges over US 52 downtown are set to go to contract in October 2028. The 16th Street bridges over US 52 and the railroad are set for September 2027. [7][4]

The NC 8 (Germanton Road) bridge over US 52 is set for July 2027. The East Clemmonsville Road bridge over I-285/US 52 is set for August 2030. [7]

I-40 and I-40 Business

At I-40/US 311, NCDOT is turning the half interchange at NC 109 (Thomasville Road) into a full one, and removing the half interchange and its connector roads at Clemmonsville Road. [7]

Blythe holds that $38.9 million contract. It was 10 percent done in September, with bridge demolition under way and widening starting on the eastbound side. Completion is set for Jan. 11, 2030. [7]

The Kinnamon Road bridge over I-40 is set to be replaced, with a contract planned for April 2028. [7]

On I-40 Business, the bridges over Brushy Fork Creek and Lowery Court SE are in design. The $46.3 million job is set to go to contract in July 2030. [7]

On the interstate itself, the March 2024 NCDOT table bars trucks over 26,000 pounds with three or more axles from the left lane of I-40 in Forsyth between US 158 (Stratford Road) and a mile west of I-74. [13]

Nearby, a 2025 resurfacing contract was milling US 158 (South Stratford Road) from Burke Mill Road to Lewisville-Clemmons Road in September, with completion set for Oct. 30, 2026. [7]

East side: Kernersville, Walkertown and US 158

The Kernersville Southern Loop will widen Big Mill Farm Road and Hopkins Road and build a new interchange at US 421 (Salem Parkway). The state cut its budget in July to match the low bid. [1]

That job was 10 percent done in September, with crews boring under US 421 and clearing east of it. Completion is set for January 2031. [7]

US 158 (Reidsville Road) is being widened north of US 421 to Belews Creek Road. It was 46 percent done, with substantial completion expected near the end of 2028. [7]

In Walkertown, NC 66 (Old Hollow Road) is being widened from Harley Drive. The Morris Street intersection was closed for the work, and the target is summer 2027. In October the state added $5.6 million for right of way. [7][4]

On NC 66 (West Mountain Street) in Kernersville, a turn lane near the Deere-Hitachi east entrance was pushed back a year, to construction in fiscal 2028. [1]

In Winston-Salem, Lowery Street from the Salem Parkway ramps to Miami Avenue was added in October. The plan is a two-lane industrial street with curb and gutter, with construction in fiscal 2029. [4]

City truck and curb rules, briefly

Our downtown Greensboro and Winston-Salem guide covers these in more detail. Trucks passing through must use designated truck routes by the shortest, most direct way. [10]

Trucks registered over 13,000 pounds may not pass through on listed streets once signs are posted. Downtown, that includes parts of Fourth, Third and First streets. Deliveries on those streets are allowed. [10]

Curb loading zones allow only quick loading or unloading during posted hours, and never more than 30 minutes without the police chief's permission. [12]

Freight trucks, and vehicles over 80 inches wide or 30 feet long, may not park on city streets at any time unless they are loading or unloading. The fine is $50. [12]

Downtown, the Fifth Street railroad trestle near the Innovation Quarter has been reported at 12 feet 4 inches, and trucks have hit it. It is not the Fifth Street bridge over US 52, which is a separate NCDOT replacement job. [19][7]

Who ships here

Reynolds American's Tobaccoville plant, in northwest Forsyth, covers about 2 million square feet. It makes 45 to 47 billion cigarettes a year plus nicotine pouches and vapor products. [15]

Whitaker Park, a 220-acre former Reynolds campus near downtown, has been rebuilt with new industrial buildings. [17]

In Kernersville, John Deere announced a $70 million excavator factory in January 2026. Ralph Lauren runs a distribution center at 2755 NC 66. [16][18]

With several US 52 bridges and interchanges in work this fall, it can pay to ask the shipper or receiver which gate and approach to use before you leave. [7]

Scales and parking near Winston-Salem

The Highway Patrol lists no fixed weigh station in Forsyth County. The closest on I-40 is about 6 miles west of Statesville, with two fixed scales. The phone is 704-878-4249. [9]

Toward Virginia, the Mount Airy station on I-77 is about 3 miles south of the Virginia line. Headed east, the Hillsborough station on I-40/I-85 is about 15 miles west of Durham. [9]

No public rest area sits on I-40 in Forsyth. As of Sept. 30, 2026, DriveNC listed 17 truck spaces each way at the Davie County I-40 rest area and 19 each way at Davidson County on I-85. [14]

TA Mocksville, at I-40 Exit 170, lists 139 truck spaces in a truck stop directory. We found no official truck parking inside Winston-Salem. [20]

City streets are off limits for parking a freight truck except while loading or unloading, so it helps to plan the overnight stop before you head in. Check DriveNC for US 52 and I-40 closures before you roll. [12][21]
