Hickory Nut Gorge for truckers: US 64 and US 74A after Helene, October 2026
What's open through Hickory Nut Gorge as of October 2026, which roads into Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are still local traffic only, the weight and trailer limits that bar most trucks, the rebuild's timeline, and how to plan a delivery.
The short version
Hurricane Helene tore up US 64 and US 74A through Hickory Nut Gorge in September 2024. Two years later, you can drive from Hendersonville through Bat Cave to Chimney Rock again, on a temporary two-lane road. [8][2][22]
Two other ways in are still local traffic only as of Oct. 23, 2026: US 74A through Gerton, and NC 9 north of Bat Cave toward Black Mountain. [10]
Most trucks couldn't use the gorge before the storm either. US 74A has barred vehicles over 13,000 pounds since 1996, and US 64 and US 74A both have trailer length limits. [11]
The permanent rebuild between Bat Cave and Chimney Rock is due in 2029. Until then, expect work zones, and check DriveNC before every trip. [2][6][10]
What's open as of October 2026
US 64 from Hendersonville into Bat Cave reopened to all traffic on March 28, 2026. It had been local traffic only. NCDOT said the job cost about $25 million, about $7 million under budget. [8]
It opened with temporary signals while crews stabilized slopes and built the eastbound lane. NCDOT expected it fully open by Memorial Day 2026. We found no follow-up confirming that date. [8][9]
From Bat Cave east to Chimney Rock, a temporary two-lane paved road was in place by July 30, 2026, finished months ahead of schedule. [2]
When we pulled DriveNC's event list on Oct. 23, 2026, it showed no closures or lane closures on US 64 between Hendersonville and Bat Cave, or on US 64/74A through Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. [10]
No event listed doesn't mean no flaggers. Residents described one-way sections and temporary signals with unpredictable waits as recently as June 2026. [10][19]
Still local traffic only
US 74A is closed to through traffic between Bearwallow Mountain Road and US 64, the Gerton stretch above Bat Cave. Only local traffic may use it. DriveNC lists it from March 31, 2026, with a planned end of Jan. 8, 2027. [10]
NC 9 is also local traffic only in two pieces, from the Buncombe side down to US 74A, and from the Henderson-Rutherford line to Bat Cave. DriveNC notes checkpoints on the second piece. Both list Jan. 8, 2027 as the planned end. [10]
Treat those end dates as targets, not promises. Our tip: if a dispatcher's route sends you from Asheville or Black Mountain down US 74A or NC 9 to Bat Cave, it's wrong until DriveNC says otherwise. [10]
NCDOT's secretary said in July 2026 that the best way from Asheville to the Chimney Rock area during construction is US 64 through Hendersonville and Bat Cave. [1][2]
The truck rules that were there before Helene
NCDOT's truck restriction table, dated March 5, 2024, bars vehicles over 13,000 pounds gross on US 74A from I-40 near Asheville all the way east to US 221 in Rutherfordton. The weight rules date from 1996. [11][12]
US 64 shares pavement with US 74A from Bat Cave through Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, so that stretch falls under the same weight rule. [21][11]
Length limits stack on top. US 74A, US 64 in Henderson and Rutherford counties, and NC 9 have two of them: no through tractors with trailers over 30 feet, and no tractors with trailers over 48 feet at all. [11]
The nearby side routes are tight too. US 221 in Rutherford County bars through trucks with three or more axles from Oakland Road north to US 64/74A. NC 108 in Polk County bars them from I-26 east to US 74. [11]
Put simply, a 53-foot van has no legal way through the gorge. A box truck over 13,000 pounds can use it only under the destination rule below. [11]
Delivering to Chimney Rock or Lake Lure
State law gives that reason. G.S. 20-116(h) says a weight-restricted highway doesn't bar a truck 'when its destination is located solely upon that highway.' [16]
So a straight truck over 13,000 pounds delivering to an address on US 64/74A appears to be covered. The 48-foot trailer rule has no 'through' wording in NCDOT's table, so don't count on any delivery exception for longer trailers. [16][11]
We couldn't confirm how troopers apply the weight exception to side streets off the main road. Call the State Highway Patrol's Motor Carrier Enforcement section at 919-715-8683 before you route a heavy truck in. [12][16]
Chimney Rock Village says its shops and restaurants are open, with a public lot at the west end of the village and limited street parking. Nothing on its site covers truck access or delivery times. [15]
The village lost 15 of its 45 businesses to Helene, the mayor said in February 2026. Lake Lure reopened to the public in mid-May 2026 after about 20 months of recovery. [14][22]
Our tip: ask the receiver how other suppliers get in, and whether they'll meet you outside the gorge with a smaller truck. [15][11]
Getting heavy freight close
NCDOT hasn't published a truck detour for the gorge, and its restriction table doesn't name a paired truck route for the US 74A weight limit. [11][17]
Our reading of the map: from I-26, take US 74 east toward Forest City, then US 221 north to Rutherfordton. From I-40, US 221 runs south from Marion to Rutherfordton. [21][11]
From Rutherfordton, US 64/74A runs west toward Lake Lure. Only local deliveries within the weight and length limits should head up it. [11][16]
Watch the posted bridges. NCDOT's Oct. 9, 2026 table lists two Broad River bridges near Chimney Rock, on Fall Creek Drive and Wildflower Hill, at 36 tons for single trucks and tractor-trailers. [13]
It also lists NC 9 over a branch of Little White Oak Creek in Polk County at 30 tons, and US 74 Business over the Second Broad River near Forest City at 31 tons single and 35 tons tractor-trailer. [13]
No posted bridge appears on US 64 or US 74A themselves, but the table skips most secondary roads. Watch for signs. [13]
The rebuild and its timeline
The permanent rebuild between Bat Cave and Chimney Rock is NCDOT's first progressive design-build job, where design and construction move ahead together. STV is the lead designer and Wright Brothers Construction is the builder. [7]
It covers roughly 2.5 to 3 miles of road plus several bridges. STV gives about 3 miles; Blue Ridge Public Radio called it a 2.5-mile stretch. [7][19]
In July 2026, the project was still in design and permitting, and NCDOT and the builder were still agreeing on a construction price. The goal was to start work across the whole corridor in August 2026. [6][3]
The finish date is 2029. One local paper reported it as two to three more years from July 2026. [2][6][3]
The latest published cost estimate dates from July 2025: $286 million for US 64/74 at Chimney Rock, $126 million for US 74A in Henderson County and $32 million for US 64, at least $444 million in all. [4]
Weather can close it again
Up to 10 inches of rain fell in spots over Memorial Day weekend 2026. It washed out Bearwallow Mountain Road near Gerton for about four days and tore apart a culvert under construction. [19]
Helene stripped the slopes of plants, so sediment now clogs pipes and ditches faster. A small landslide closed the Chimney Rock State Park road after the same storm; the park reopened June 3. [19][20]
Our tip: if heavy rain is in the forecast, check DriveNC the morning you run, and have a plan to hold short in Hendersonville or Rutherfordton. [10][19]
Before any gorge run, confirm three things: your gross weight and trailer length against the posted limits, that your destination is on the road you're using, and the current DriveNC status for US 64, US 74A and NC 9. [11][16][10]
