Rules, hours and road conditions change. Every fact below links to its source; check the source before you roll if it matters to your run.

The short version

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base sits in Goldsboro and has three gates: Berkeley, Slocumb and Oak Forest. Berkeley is the main gate and the only one open 24 hours. [1][2]

Slocumb Gate is the one listed as open to all traffic, including RVs and commercial vehicles, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oak Forest keeps the same weekday hours but is listed for standard traffic, not commercial. [1][2]

If you show up at night or on a weekend, Berkeley Gate is your option, because it is the only one running around the clock. [1][2]

The base is not open to the public. If you do not hold a DoD ID, you need a visitor pass before you can drive on, and since May 7, 2025 that means a REAL ID-compliant license or an accepted substitute like a passport. [3][4][5]

Call ahead every time. Gate hours at military installations change without public notice, and the threat level posted that day can close a gate or slow every truck in line. [6]

Seymour Johnson's gates, in plain terms

Seymour Johnson is home to the 4th Fighter Wing and the Air Force Reserve's 916th Air Refueling Wing. It covers roughly 3,300 acres inside Goldsboro, with more than 4,500 active-duty people and around 900 civilians working there. [3][7]

Berkeley Gate runs off Berkeley Boulevard and is the installation's main entrance. It is open 24 hours a day, and the Visitor Control Center sits at this gate. [1][2]

Slocumb Gate is the weekday gate that the base housing partner's gate page specifically describes as open to all traffic, including commercial vehicles, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. [2]

Oak Forest Gate also runs 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, but it is listed for standard traffic. Do not plan a tractor-trailer delivery through it without checking first. [2]

We could not fetch any page on seymourjohnson.af.mil directly to confirm these hours, because the base's own site blocks automated access. Treat the hours above as a starting point as of September 2026, and confirm with the receiving unit before you roll. [1][2]

Getting a pass: REAL ID, the Visitor Center and DBIDS

Anyone 18 or older without a DoD Common Access Card or a retired military ID has to stop at the Visitor Control Center and show a valid U.S. ID before getting on base. [8]

As of May 7, 2025, that ID has to be REAL ID-compliant. A passport works as a substitute, and a DoD ID card is unaffected by the rule. If your license is not marked as REAL ID-compliant, bring the passport. [4][5]

The Visitor Center closes at 4:30 p.m., so a late-afternoon arrival can leave you outside the fence with a loaded trailer. Wayne Community College's base access page, written for students who have to clear the same gate, says passes can be issued up to seven days ahead of the visit. [5]

Phone numbers listed for the base include the Welcome Center at (919) 722-1343, Information and Referral Services at (919) 722-1123, and ID and CAC card processing at (919) 722-8702. Calling first is worth more than any published hours table. [3]

Repeat visitors and contractors are usually enrolled in DBIDS, the Defense Biometric Identification System. It is the DoD-wide system the guards use at the gate, scanning your ID against criminal and military databases with a handheld reader. [9]

Regular deliveries under a contract often involve a background and vehicle check before access is granted. Wayne Community College's page describes exactly that pattern for its students: a security check form each term, with applicants contacted only if something comes back wrong. [5]

Hazmat and inspections: what is not published

Seymour Johnson does not publish a commercial vehicle inspection procedure, a hazmat delivery policy or a restricted-cargo list that we could find or fetch. We are telling you that plainly instead of guessing at one. [1]

That means the only reliable answer for a hazmat or unusual load is the receiving unit on base. Get the name and phone number of your point of contact from the broker or shipper before you accept the load, not when you are sitting at the gate. [1]

Expect an inspection anyway. At elevated threat levels, 100 percent ID checks become standard, which means every vehicle including delivery trucks gets looked at. [6]

Carry two forms of photo ID any time you enter a U.S. military installation. That is the general rule regardless of what the posted threat level happens to be. [6]

Getting to Goldsboro

US 70 is the main route into Goldsboro, and it is how most trucks reach the base from the Raleigh side. Seymour Johnson is roughly 50 to 60 miles from Raleigh and about 50 miles from Rocky Mount. [10]

Distance from Fayetteville depends which source you believe, somewhere in the 55 to 65 mile range. Plan on the longer number if your appointment is tight. [10][11]

The US 70 Bypass north of Goldsboro is a separate 21.7-mile four-lane freeway that rejoins US 70 at both ends, with interchanges at NC 581, I-795 and US 117. Taking the bypass keeps you out of downtown Goldsboro and saves roughly 15 minutes. [12]

NCDOT has an active project, R-5829, extending US 70 improvements from the Goldsboro Bypass toward Princeton. Check DriveNC before you plan a tight window through that stretch. [13]

I-795 and US 117 both tie in near the bypass, which gives you routes south toward I-40 and Wilmington. No official base page publishes turn-by-turn directions from I-95, so use the bypass and US 70 rather than trusting a GPS shortcut through town. [12]

FPCON: why a gate closes with no warning

FPCON stands for Force Protection Condition, the Defense Department's system for posting a threat-response level at an installation. The current level is posted at every gate and facility entrance. [6]

At elevated levels such as Charlie, an installation can add security measures at the gates, including closing gates outright and putting more security forces on the remaining ones. [6]

At Charlie and Delta, the 100 percent ID check rule kicks in. Every vehicle gets checked, so a gate that normally moves trucks in ten minutes can back up for an hour. [6]

You cannot look up in advance what will happen at a given level. The specific measures are deliberately not released publicly, for security reasons. All you can plan for is that delays and closures are possible on any given day. [6]

The other NC bases

Fort Bragg near Fayetteville is the one NC installation with a dedicated commercial gate. The Knox Street Truck Plaza takes commercial vehicles only, no passenger cars, and runs 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends and federal holidays. [14]

Bragg's 24-hour gates include Canopy Lane, Yadkin Road, Long Street, Chicken Road, Honeycutt Road, R. Miller Road, Linden Oaks and Simmons Army Airfield. Butner Road, Manchester Road and Rock Merritt run 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and close weekends and holidays. The Visitor Control Center is at (910) 907-5165. Our full Fort Bragg guide covers the base in detail. [14]

As of September 2026 the All American Access Control Point at Bragg is closed for bridge replacement and road work, though its Visitor Control Center is still open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. [14]

Camp Lejeune at Jacksonville has six gates. The Main Gate, Sneads Ferry Gate and Wilson Gate run 24 hours. Piney Green Road Gate is inbound 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and Tarawa Terrace II runs 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. No source names a separate truck gate, so the Main Gate is the default. [15]

MCAS New River, also at Jacksonville, keeps its Visitor Control Center at 187 Curtis Road, open weekdays 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., reachable at (910) 449-5040. The Main Gate on Curtis Road is open 24 hours and Douglass Gate off NC 17 runs weekdays 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. [16]

MCAS Cherry Point at Havelock runs its Roosevelt Boulevard Main Gate 24 hours. Pass and ID is in Building 251 at that gate, phone (252) 466-5921, open weekdays in the morning. The smaller gates at Cherry Point have narrow commuter and school-day windows, so send trucks to the Main Gate. [17]

Sunny Point: the one you do not deliver to

Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point sits on the west bank of the Cape Fear River about 26 miles south of Wilmington, covering roughly 8,500 acres in Brunswick County near Southport. [18]

It is the Defense Department's main ammunition seaport on the East Coast, run by the Army's 596th Transportation Brigade, and it moves military ammunition and explosives between trucks, rail cars and ships. It has about 62 miles of track on site and three concrete docks. [18][19]

Sunny Point is not an open post. There is no general access for the public, and even visitors with business there need appointments. Given what the terminal handles, items like lighters and matches get surrendered at entry. [18][19]

If a load board or a broker offers you something bound for Sunny Point, that is specialized DoD-controlled freight with its own clearance process, not a delivery you take on a standard authority. [18][19]

Before you roll

Get a name and a phone number on base for your delivery, and call to confirm the gate and the hours for the day you are coming. Published hours are a starting point, not a guarantee. [6]

Check that your driver's license is REAL ID-compliant. If it is not, put a passport in the truck, because the requirement has been in force since May 2025 and the guard at the gate cannot waive it. [4][5]

Leave room in the schedule. Visitor centers close in the afternoon, weekday-only gates shut at 6 p.m. at Seymour Johnson, and a raised threat level can add an hour at any gate. [2][5][6]

Leave the weapons and the camera alone. Prohibited items at DoD installations typically include weapons and ammunition, and photographing or sketching an installation is generally off limits. Unsponsored visitors also have to stay escorted. [20]
