Rules, hours and road conditions change. Every fact below links to its source; check the source before you roll if it matters to your run.

The short version

US 52 is the freeway north out of Winston-Salem. At Rural Hall, I-74 comes in off the Northern Beltway and runs with US 52 past King and Pilot Mountain to a split south of Mount Airy. [7][8]

From that split you have two ways to Virginia. I-74 runs west to I-77 near Pine Ridge and on to the state line. US 52 keeps north around Mount Airy as the Andy Griffith Parkway. [7][8]

The main work zone as of October 2026 is the US 52 bridge job over Toms Creek at Pilot Mountain, set to finish in summer 2027. Expect a temporary pattern and the odd overnight closure there. [10][11]

NCDOT's truck table has no rows for US 52 or I-74 on this run, and its Oct. 9, 2026 posted bridges table lists no bridge on either road. The side roads in Surry and Stokes are another story. [1][2]

The only fixed scale the Highway Patrol lists near this run is its Mount Airy station on I-77, about 3 miles south of Virginia. The Surry welcome center at the state line showed open on Oct. 29, 2026. [5][4]

Winston-Salem to Rural Hall

US 52 runs as a freeway through central Winston-Salem, past Salem Parkway and on to I-40. Our Winston-Salem guide covers the bridge and paving work inside the city and the new Northern Beltway, so we won't repeat it here. [8]

The piece that matters for this run is at Rural Hall. That's where I-74 leaves the eastern Northern Beltway and joins US 52 heading north. Wikipedia says all movements at the I-74 and US 52 interchange were open as of December 2024. [7]

Just north, the NC 65 interchange for Rural Hall and Bethania was finished in October 2019 as early Beltway work. Our tip: older GPS maps may not show the full I-74 link here, so follow the signs. [7]

DriveNC listed no US 52 or I-74 work in Forsyth or Stokes counties when we checked on Oct. 29, 2026. That can change fast, so look again the day you roll. [3]

King and Pilot Mountain: the Future I-74 stretch

From Rural Hall to the split south of Mount Airy, the road is US 52, marked as Future I-74. It's already a freeway. Wikipedia says the Winston-Salem to Pilot Mountain section opened by 1964. [7][8]

The plan is to bring it up to interstate standards and sign it as I-74. Wikipedia says the project has no funding, and we found no current NCDOT schedule, so treat it as a long-range idea. [7][8]

Interchanges on this stretch serve King and Tobaccoville, Pinnacle, Pilot Mountain State Park and the town of Pilot Mountain at NC 268. Wikipedia's exit numbers don't match from one list to the next, so go by the signs. [8]

The Reynolds American plant at Tobaccoville sits along this stretch. WFDD reported in April 2025 that Reynolds planned 300 more jobs there for nicotine pouch production, after adding 500 in 2024. [15][8]

WFDD called the Tobaccoville site the largest manufacturing center in the British American Tobacco group. Our tip: get the gate and dock instructions from the shipper before you head in. [15]

Toms Creek bridges at Pilot Mountain, as of October 2026

NCDOT is replacing the two 64-year-old US 52 bridges over Toms Creek in Pilot Mountain. A Mount Airy contractor began in 2024 by building a temporary bridge to carry traffic. [9]

The new southbound bridge opened on its permanent alignment on March 11, 2026. Northbound traffic moved onto the temporary structure on April 20, so crews could tear out the old northbound bridge. [9][10]

The $13 million contract calls for all work to finish in summer 2027. At NCDOT's last update in June, northbound traffic was still on the temporary bridge. [10][11]

When NCDOT needs a full closure, the detours so far have used NC 268 and Old US 52 around the bridge. A June 30 closure ran from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Our tip: check DriveNC for night closures before a late run through Pilot Mountain. [9][11]

North of Pilot Mountain, DriveNC also lists a construction zone on southbound US 52 from Cook School Road to the I-74 ramp, with intermittent lane closures through December 2027. It names no project. [3]

The Mount Airy split: I-74 or US 52 to Virginia

South of Mount Airy, I-74 leaves US 52 at a freeway junction and heads west. It passes exits for Park Drive, US 601, Red Brush Road and NC 89 before it meets I-77 near Pine Ridge. [7]

From there, I-74 and I-77 share about 4 miles of road north to the Virginia line. Past the line it's I-77 alone, headed for Wytheville. [7]

Stay on US 52 instead and you get a short stretch of freeway, then a four-lane divided road around the west side of Mount Airy. Wikipedia says it narrows to two lanes just before Virginia. [8]

Our tip: for I-77 north and most long-haul trips, the I-74 route keeps you on interstate. US 52 through Mount Airy makes more sense for a stop in town or a load bound for Hillsville. [7][8]

US 601 meets I-74 in Mount Airy. The Elkin Tribune reported in March 2026 that NCDOT plans to widen it to four lanes from I-74 south to Cody Trail, with construction set to start in April 2028. [12][7]

The same story quoted a local business worried about access, since many of its customers pull long trailers. It put the cost near $147 million. [12]

Truck limits and posted bridges in Surry and Stokes

NCDOT's truck restriction table, dated March 5, 2024, has no rows for US 52 or I-74 in Forsyth, Stokes or Surry. The limits show up on the two-lane roads that branch off. [1]

In Surry, the table bars through trucks on NC 89 between I-77 and the Virginia line. Our reading: since I-77 is one end, that's the part west of the interstate, not NC 89 in Mount Airy. [1][7]

Also in Surry, tractors with trailers longer than 48 feet are barred from NC 103 between NC 89 and the Virginia line, and from NC 18 between the Alleghany County line and NC 89. [1]

In Stokes, NC 66 is closed to through trucks between Flat Shoals Road and NC 89. Our tip: if a GPS shortcut off US 52 near King points you up NC 66, check the table first. [1]

The Oct. 9, 2026 posted bridges table has one row in these three counties: NC 268 over the Southern Railway in Surry, posted at 35 tons for single trucks and 38 tons for tractor-semitrailers. Its coordinates put it in the Pilot Mountain area. [2]

NC 268 is also one of the Toms Creek detour roads. Thirty-eight tons is 76,000 pounds, so a heavy tractor-trailer can be over the limit. Our tip: if you're heavy and get detoured, check where the posted bridge sits first. [2][11]

Off the main road, DriveNC listed a Round Peak Church Road closure west of Mount Airy through Feb. 12, 2027, for an NC 89 roundabout project. The signed detour uses Palmer Road and Beulah Church Road. [3]

Scales and the welcome center

The Highway Patrol's Mount Airy weigh station has two fixed scales on I-77, about 3 miles south of Virginia. The northbound phone is (336) 415-3370 and southbound is (336) 415-3356. [5]

Going by Wikipedia's 4-mile figure for the shared stretch, that puts the scales where I-74 and I-77 run together. Coming up I-74 from US 52, expect to pass them before the state line. There's no fixed scale on US 52. [5][7]

Temporary checks can pop up anywhere. State law requires trucks rated at 10,001 pounds or more to stop at temporary weigh sites when signs say so, and an officer can send you to a scale within five miles. [6]

DriveNC lists one state stop on the whole run: the Surry County welcome center on I-77 at mile 105, at the Virginia line. It has 10 truck spaces and showed as open on Oct. 29, 2026. [4]

When we checked for our I-77 guide, DriveNC showed it closed on Sept. 21, 2026, so check DriveNC on the day. DriveNC lists no state rest area on US 52 or I-74. Our tip: 10 spaces fill fast, so have a backup plan. [4]

Fancy Gap and the freight around Mount Airy

North of the line, I-77 climbs Fancy Gap Mountain in Virginia. VDOT has warned that high winds can blow over tractor-trailers and box trucks between Virginia mile markers 0 and 10. Our I-77 guide has more. [13]

In those wind events, VDOT has told commercial vehicles with loads under 25,000 pounds to find another route. Our tip: if you're empty or light, check VDOT and the forecast before you leave Mount Airy. [13]

Fog is the other hazard. WSLS reported in 2016 that VDOT put variable speed limit signs on I-77 between Virginia mile markers 0 and 15, dropping limits when visibility falls to 650 feet or less. [14]

Those limits can range from 65 mph down to 30 mph, the station reported, and VDOT may post fog advisories without cutting the speed. Our tip: watch the signs as you cross the line, even on a clear day in Mount Airy. [14]

In Mount Airy itself, the North Carolina Granite Corporation runs what the state calls the world's largest open-faced granite quarry, in business since 1889. Our tip: ask the shipper about loading hours and heavy-load routing. [16]
