Hauling in and out of Greensboro

Compiled from public sources and checked September 13, 2026. Conditions change; confirm closures and clearances before you roll.

Where the freight is

  • FedEx Express runs its Mid-Atlantic hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI), a $300 million project that came with a new 9,000-foot runway. [3][4]
  • Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina, on the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite in Liberty about 20 miles southeast, began production in November 2025 in a 7 million sq ft plant. [5]
  • The Toyota plant ships hybrid battery modules to Toyota's Kentucky plant and to Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Alabama, with capacity ramping in phases through 2030. [5][6]
  • Publix runs a distribution center in the 5500 block of Burlington Road in McLeansville that supplies stores in the Carolinas and Virginia. It pairs a refrigerated warehouse with a 1.2 million sq ft dry grocery building. [7][8]
  • Procter & Gamble has a plant on Swing Road west of downtown and a production and distribution site in Browns Summit. [9]
  • Fastenal owns the former Ralph Lauren distribution center at 4100 Beechwood Drive in Piedmont Centre. Ralph Lauren moved to a leased DC at 2755 NC 66 in Kernersville. [10]
  • NCDOT names Greensboro among the parts of the state with large concentrations of distribution facilities. [1]

Rail and ports

  • Norfolk Southern's Greensboro intermodal terminal is at 1105 Merritt Drive and uses the ExpressNS+ gate system with QR-code check-in. [12]
  • The rail line from Charlotte through Greensboro to Raleigh is one of the three busiest rail freight corridors in North Carolina. [13]
  • Regional freight planners name Norfolk, Wilmington and Charleston as the Triad's container ports, reached mainly on I-40 and I-85. [13]

Roads

  • NCDOT estimates more than 16,000 trucks a day on I-85 between Greensboro and Durham, the highest truck volume in the state. [1]
  • I-40 between Winston-Salem and Greensboro carries an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 trucks a day. [1]
  • The Greensboro Urban Loop is a 39.5-mile beltway signed as I-73, I-85, I-785, I-840 and US 421. Its last section opened in January 2023. [14][15]
  • Two US 421 interchanges serve the Toyota megasite: Julian Airport Road and Dogwood Lane, opened in 2024, and Shiloh Road, opened January 5, 2026. Both have roundabouts at the ramps. [11]
  • Guilford County had the third most truck crashes in North Carolina from 2015 to 2019, including 241 crashes on ramps. [1]
  • No Greensboro location made ATRI's 2026 list of the top 100 truck bottlenecks in the US. [2]

Low clearances downtown

  • News reports put the East Market Street railroad underpass at 10 ft 4 in, low enough to trap a delivery truck. [16]
  • The East Washington Street railroad bridge is posted at 12 ft, and trucks have hit it repeatedly. [17]
  • The Lindsay Street railroad underpass is reported at 12 ft; a 13-foot semi got stuck there. [18]

Truck parking and fuel

  • TA Greensboro at I-85/I-40 Exit 138 in Whitsett has 173 truck spaces with reservations, a CAT scale, 6 service bays, showers and laundry. [19]
  • The biggest lots are east toward Mebane: Petro at 500 Buckhorn Road with 285 spaces, Flying J at Exit 150 with 251, Pilot at Exit 152 with 140, and Love's with 82. [20][21]
  • Nearby NCDOT rest areas are on I-85 at mile marker 139 west of Burlington and mile marker 99 south of Thomasville, and on I-73/74 at mile marker 58 in Randolph County. Staying overnight is not allowed. [22]
  • NCDOT lists I-85 as at capacity for truck parking. Some lots look full because carriers reserve spaces through fuel contracts. [1]

Weigh stations

  • The State Highway Patrol lists no fixed weigh station in Guilford, Forsyth or Davidson counties. [23]
  • The closest fixed scales are on I-40/I-85 at Hillsborough, about 40 miles east, and on I-40 about 6 miles west of Statesville. [23]

When volume changes

  • High Point Market runs twice a year. The 2026 shows are April 25 to 29 and October 17 to 21. [24][25][26]
  • Exhibitor freight at High Point Market moves on scheduled dock appointments because dock space is limited. [27]
  • North Carolina grows about 60 percent of the US flue-cured tobacco crop, and harvest usually runs from July into October. [28]
